Pet Insurance

Pet insurance is becoming more and more popular in Australia, with more companies offering insurance each year. Deciding whether to have insurance cover for our pets, much less which company and policy to get can be difficult and oftentimes confusing.

What are the benefits of Pet Insurance?
Pet insurance offers peace of mind should your pet suffer an unexpected illness or accident. Vet bills can quickly run into the hundreds or thousands of dollars when pets suffer a severe or sudden illness, and owners are often faced with a choice between treatment they can’t afford or euthanasia of their pet. By offering reimbursement for a large portion of these vet bills pet insurance can alleviate this decision, allowing your pet to receive a level of care you may not have otherwise been able to afford. Depending on your policy, you may also be able to receive reimbursement for routine veterinary care such as vaccinations and parasite control.

What will I be covered for?
As in human health insurance cover, what your pet will be covered for is dependent on which company and policy you choose. Generally, pet insurance companies offer policies which cover accident only, accident and illness or accident, illness and routine care. Most companies insure animals over 9 years old for accident only, and won’t insure against pre-existing conditions, so the time to start cover is when your pet is still young and healthy. It is also important to ask whether there are any exclusions or extra costs for your breed of pet – some breeds can be pre-disposed to certain conditions, and insurance providers may not cover these.

Who should I get cover with?
Which insurance provider and policy is most suitable for you and your pet is an individual choice – we don’t recommend any one provider over another and you should find a policy which suits your needs and finances. Some questions to ask when considering a policy are;
• How long has this company been in business?
• Is there an age limit for this policy or will my pet be covered for its entire life?
• Does the cover decrease as the animal ages?
• Does the policy guarantee lifetime renewal?
• Is there an annual policy limit or sub-limits?
• What are the waiting periods for different conditions?
• Are there any special conditions or exclusions for my breed of pet?
• Is there an excess and will changing this change my premium?
• What extras and routine care are included in this policy?
• Is dentistry covered including routine dental care?
